The 2017 BMW X1 is a compact crossover offering from German automaker BMW. Currently, in its 2nd generation, this SUV was first launched in 2008 Paris Motor Show, following which it was released in markets in 2009. BMW X1 shares its platform with BMW 3 Series Touring and BMW X3. The 2017 BMW X1 will boast of significant upgrades to overall appearance, technologies, and safety. Recent spy shots and leaks indicate there is a lot more than just muscles and looks of this mid-size SUV.
2017 BMW X1 – Design Updates: Sharp, With More Stamina
Entry level 1-Series hatchback, marketed all over Europe seems to have provided a lot of design cues for this BMW X1. Tall kidney front grille, sculpted hood, and angular headlamps bear striking similarities with the 1-Class hatchback in this regard. Existing L-shaped tail lamps on existing models have been replaced with streamlined designs; this adds in creating a wider impression of the rear fascia.
2017 BMW X1 clearly rides lower than current models, has lower rocker panels and broader fenders. Based on BMW UKL platform, all these refreshments are indicative of beginning a new era in muscular designs, with high reliability and durability. The flexibility showcased by UKL platform (same as Mini Countryman) is in line with BMW’s strategy of creating a universal platform for all its front wheel drive vehicles. Finally, wide split-spoke wheels seem to have been inspired by other models of M series. Other significant refreshments have arrived in form of longer front and rear overhangs, and a slightly taller body. This has created extra space for passengers and cargo alike, and more comfortable in terms of headroom and legroom. Front windshield now bulges to the end of front wheel arches, a significant increase than current models.
Inside, expect some upgrades quite familiar with other M models: luxury upholstery and likes, premium quality metal trims throughout the cabin, and other standard accessories. The SUV may also feature more automation like other upcoming BMW models.
BMW X1 will feature upgraded high-tech features like adaptive LED headlamps; rear seats which are power folded, power liftgate having hands free operations. Standard driver assist systems include forward collision warning, lane departure warning, parking assist (automated parking is available), person warning with city light braking functions.
The spine of BMW X1 technology suite can be shortlisted as:
- Active cruise control with Go and Stop functions
- BMW approach control warning
- Heads up display
- Upgraded navigation system equipped with iDrive Touch Controller
- Automatic map updates.
Brand new connectivity upgrades include:
- Life 360,
- Facebook and other social networking platforms integrated into the BMW ConnectedDrive app powered infotainment systems.
2017 BMW X1 – Drive Train and Transmission Specs:
In terms of power, most changes will likely occur. A big loss for 2017 BMW X1 is phasing out of inline 6 cylinder unit. This will mean the 4 cylinders 2 liter unit in XDrive28i X1 will serve as only available drive train in US markets. This 2-liter unit has a maximum output of 228 horsepower and 350 Newton meters of torque. Normal driving modes will deliver one hundred percent of this torque to front wheels; however, if the need arises, it can be channeled to rear wheels as well via a multi-plate clutch.
Drivetrain choices for European markets are also set to decrease; diesel-powered 3 cylinder units which have a capacity of 114 horsepower will not be available. However, BMW has an sDrive Edition in its pipeline associated with front wheel drive models. American markets will receive an 8-speed automatic transmission on 2017 BMW X1 as the standard offering. Weaker drive trains in other markets will be sold with the 6-speed manual transmission as standard.
If opted for high-performance M models with sports package, sports seats, shift paddles, much firmer suspension and M steering wheel is available.
The UKL platform is said to help in reduction of around 65 pounds of total curb weight; this, however, does not seem to affect the performance much, as is evident from the acceleration: 0 – 62 mph in 6.3 seconds. Top speed of this upcoming mid-size SUV is said to be around 129 mph.
2017 BMW X1 – Price, Availability, and Competition:
The base price of 2017 BMW X1 will probably start somewhere around $35,200 mark for front wheel drive models, same as current models. xDrive 4 wheel drive and M Sports Package may be priced at $38,000 and $50,000 respectively.
